Lucca Comics & Games 2026 runs 28 October to 1 November. Lucca has no airport and no high-speed rail — here is how to reach it from Pisa and Florence, what the ZTL and parking rules are, and why 30 October needs a plan B.

Lucca Comics & Games returns for its 60th edition from Wednesday 28 October to Sunday 1 November 2026, and it reshapes how the whole of northern Tuscany moves for five days. The festival fills a walled city of roughly 89,000 residents, and almost everyone arrives from somewhere else that morning.
The travel problem is specific, and it is not the one most visitors expect. Lucca has no airport and no high-speed rail — its station takes regional trains only. So the question is never "which Frecciarossa do I book", it is "how do I get from Pisa, Florence or the Versilia coast into Lucca at 9am with my costume, and back out again at midnight".
SHORT ANSWER
Fly into Pisa, which is the closest airport to Lucca at roughly 25 km, about a 30-minute drive. Regional trains run Pisa–Lucca in about half an hour and are the cheapest option if you are travelling light. A private transfer makes more sense when you are a group, carrying cosplay props or luggage, arriving late at night, or travelling on Friday 30 October — when a registered national rail strike overlaps the festival. There is no high-speed train to Lucca.

Why Lucca is harder to reach than it looks
Short answer: because Lucca sits off the high-speed network. Every rail journey there ends with a regional train, and during the festival those regional trains carry several times their normal load.
If you are used to booking a Frecciarossa or Italo between Italian cities, Lucca breaks the pattern. The nearest high-speed stops are Florence Santa Maria Novella and Pisa Centrale, and from either you transfer to a regional service. That interchange is where festival travel goes wrong: the connection is fine on a normal Tuesday and uncomfortable on a festival Saturday morning.
For the 2025 edition, Trenitalia and Regione Toscana added 140 extra regional trains — roughly 400,000 seats — on routes including Florence–Lucca, Pisa–Lucca, Viareggio–Lucca and Lucca–Aulla. That is a genuine, substantial reinforcement and it is the main reason rail works at all during the festival. Note, though, that Trenitalia had not yet published its 2026 reinforcement plan at the time of writing, so treat the 2025 numbers as the precedent rather than a 2026 promise, and check trenitalia.com in the final week of October.
Important: a rail strike overlaps the 2026 festival
Short answer: a national general strike registered by the union USB covers the rail sector from 21:00 on Thursday 29 October to 20:59 on Friday 30 October 2026 — which falls inside the festival, on what is normally one of its busiest days.
This matters more at Lucca Comics than almost anywhere else, because rail is the backbone of festival access and there is no high-speed alternative to fall back on. A second general strike registered for 30 October by USI-CIT explicitly excludes transport, which is why some news summaries say trains are unaffected that day. The USB action is the one that reaches rail.
Italian strikes are often revoked or deferred at short notice, so verify before rearranging anything. We track the registered dates in our October 2026 Italy transport strike calendar, and the mechanics of guaranteed services are covered in our guide to how Italian rail strikes work. If you are travelling on the 30th, a road transfer is the option least exposed to this particular risk.
From Pisa Airport to Lucca
Pisa is the practical gateway. The airport sits roughly 25 km from Lucca, about a 30-minute drive, and it is served by a wide range of European low-cost and scheduled routes.
Your options:
- Train via Pisa Centrale. Connect from the airport to Pisa Centrale, then take a regional train on to Lucca — roughly half an hour on the second leg. Cheapest, and reinforced during the festival. The weak point is luggage and the interchange.
- Private transfer. Direct, door to door, around 30 minutes, with no change and no luggage handling at Pisa Centrale. See Pisa Airport to Lucca transfers or our Pisa Airport guide.
If you have not booked flights yet, our comparison of flying into Florence or Pisa for Tuscany is worth reading first — for Lucca specifically, Pisa wins on distance.
From Florence to Lucca
Many visitors base themselves in Florence because Lucca's own hotels sell out early. Florence is about 80 km from Lucca, roughly an hour by road.
- Regional train. Direct regional services run Florence–Lucca, and the route was one of those reinforced in 2025. Journey time is longer than the Pisa leg, and morning departures fill quickly.
- Private transfer. Useful for groups, early starts and late returns. See Florence to Lucca transfers and the Florence–Lucca distance and route detail.
Arriving at Florence Airport instead? Our Florence and Pisa transfer hub covers direct routes from both airports to Florence hotels and Tuscan destinations.
Where visitors actually stay — and the daily commute
This is the part most festival guides skip. Lucca's accommodation inside and near the walls is limited and books out months ahead, so a large share of attendees sleep somewhere else and commute in. The common bases are Pisa, Florence, the Versilia coast (Viareggio, Forte dei Marmi) and Montecatini Terme.
That turns a single arrival into four or five round trips. Two consequences worth planning for:
- The return leg is the hard one. Evening programming runs late, and the last convenient regional trains are busy. A pre-arranged pickup removes the risk of a missed connection at the end of a long day.
- Group economics change. Per-person rail fares multiply across four or five people and five days. A vehicle is quoted per journey rather than per head, which shifts the comparison for families and groups travelling together.
The Lucca private transfer page covers point-to-point journeys in the area, and city-to-city transfers cover the longer legs if you are combining Lucca with other Tuscan stops.
Driving, parking and the ZTL
Short answer: you can drive to Lucca, but you cannot drive into the historic centre during the festival, and parking must be booked in advance.
Lucca's walled centre is a restricted-traffic zone (ZTL), and new electronic ZTL gates came into service in January 2026. During the 2025 festival the city went further: ordinance 2702 of 20 October 2025 banned transit within ZTL A between 09:00 and 19:00 across the event and suspended the ordinary access, transit and parking rules along with their usual exemptions.
The equivalent 2026 ordinance had not been published when this guide was written — Lucca has historically issued it close to the event. Check the Comune di Lucca notices in the days beforehand if you intend to drive.
For parking, the festival works with Lucca Plus, and spaces are booked in advance at eventi.parcheggilucca.it. Book early; we are deliberately not quoting a rate, because published figures circulating online come from earlier editions. The Polo Fiere site is linked to the centre by shuttle.
If you are renting a car for the wider Tuscany trip, our guide to Italy's ZTL zones explains how the fines work — Lucca is exactly the kind of town where visitors get caught.
The official bus option
The festival's own travel partner is Eventi in Bus, which bundles a round-trip coach journey with the festival ticket. The bundle includes wristband collection, so you bypass the welcome desks on arrival, and there is a package version that adds a stay at a selected hotel in Versilia. Departures run from a range of Italian cities. This is a sensible option for domestic visitors travelling solo or as a pair from a major city.
Train or private transfer? An honest comparison
For a lot of visitors the regional train is the right answer, and we would rather say so than pretend otherwise. Here is where each option genuinely fits.
| Regional train | Private transfer | |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Solo visitors and pairs travelling light from Pisa or Florence | Groups and families, costume and prop loads, early or late journeys |
| Cost basis | Per person, per leg — cheapest for one or two | Per vehicle, per journey — the gap narrows as the group grows |
| Capacity on festival days | Heavily reinforced, but morning and late-evening services are crowded | Not affected by crowding; one confirmed pickup |
| Luggage and props | Carry it yourself, through a change at Pisa or Florence | Loaded once, no interchange |
| Strike exposure | Directly exposed, including 30 October | Not covered by rail or local transport strikes |
| Main drawback | Crowding, interchanges, fixed timetable | Higher cost; road traffic around Lucca is heavy during the festival |
Two caveats stated plainly. A car is not faster than the train on the Pisa–Lucca leg once festival traffic and the centre closures are factored in — it is more direct and more predictable with luggage. And road access points around Lucca are congested at peak hours, so a transfer still needs realistic timing.
Costumes, props and luggage
Cosplay is central to Lucca, and it creates a transport problem that normal event guides do not cover. Large props, armour, wings and weapon replicas are awkward on a crowded regional train and sometimes impossible to carry through an interchange without damage.
If you are bringing a build, say so when you request a quote: dimensions and the number of passengers determine which vehicle is assigned, and an estimate given without that information tends to be wrong. Our guide to oversized luggage and sports equipment in Italian taxis covers the same principle in more detail. Note that prop regulations at the festival itself are set by the organisers — check their rules before you travel, as road transport and venue admission are separate questions.

Request a Transfer Quote →Planning checklist
- Book accommodation first, then plan transport around where you actually sleep — not the reverse.
- Prefer Pisa for flights if Lucca is your main destination.
- Check Trenitalia's 2026 reinforcement plan in the final week of October.
- Treat Friday 30 October as a rail-risk day and have a road fallback.
- Book parking in advance at eventi.parcheggilucca.it if you are driving, and expect the centre to be closed to traffic during the day.
- Plan the return journey, not just the arrival. Late evenings are when plans fail.
- Declare props and luggage when requesting any transfer quote.
Frequently Asked Questions
When is Lucca Comics & Games 2026?
Lucca Comics & Games 2026 runs from Wednesday 28 October to Sunday 1 November 2026. It is the 60th edition of the festival.
What is the closest airport to Lucca?
Pisa (Galileo Galilei) is the closest, roughly 25 km from Lucca and about a 30-minute drive. Florence Amerigo Vespucci is the second option, around 80 km away and roughly an hour by road.
Is there a high-speed train to Lucca?
No. Lucca station serves regional trains only — there is no Frecciarossa or Italo service. High-speed trains reach Florence Santa Maria Novella or Pisa Centrale, and you change to a regional train from there.
How long does the train take from Pisa to Lucca?
The Pisa–Lucca regional leg takes roughly half an hour. You first need to reach Pisa Centrale from the airport, so allow for that connection as well as the train itself.
Will there be extra trains for Lucca Comics 2026?
Very likely, but it was not confirmed at the time of writing. For the 2025 edition Trenitalia and Regione Toscana added 140 extra regional trains, around 400,000 seats. Trenitalia had not yet published its 2026 plan, so check trenitalia.com in the last week of October.
Is there a strike during Lucca Comics 2026?
A national general strike registered by USB covers the rail sector from 21:00 on 29 October to 20:59 on 30 October 2026, which falls inside the festival. A separate general strike on 30 October by USI-CIT excludes transport. Strikes can be revoked at short notice, so verify close to the date.
Can I drive into Lucca during the festival?
Not into the historic centre during the day. Lucca's walled centre is a ZTL with electronic gates, and for the 2025 edition the city banned transit inside ZTL A between 09:00 and 19:00 and suspended the usual exemptions. The 2026 ordinance had not been published when this guide was written.
Where do I park for Lucca Comics?
Parking is booked in advance through Lucca Plus at eventi.parcheggilucca.it, which is the arrangement named by the festival. The Polo Fiere site is connected to the centre by shuttle. Book early, because spaces are limited.
Is there an official bus to Lucca Comics?
Yes. Eventi in Bus is the festival's official travel partner and bundles a round-trip coach journey with the festival ticket, including wristband collection. A package version adds a hotel stay in Versilia.
Where should I stay for Lucca Comics?
Lucca itself sells out early, so many visitors stay in Pisa, Florence, the Versilia coast or Montecatini Terme and travel in each day. Choose your base first, then plan transport around it.
Is a private transfer worth it for Lucca Comics?
It depends on your group and your luggage. For one or two people travelling light from Pisa, the regional train is cheaper and perfectly practical. A transfer makes more sense for groups and families, for large cosplay props, for late-night returns, and on 30 October when rail is exposed to strike action.
How do I get back to my hotel late at night?
Plan it before you go. Evening programming runs late and the last convenient regional trains are crowded. A pre-arranged pickup at an agreed time and place avoids depending on a final connection.
Can I bring large cosplay props in a transfer vehicle?
Usually yes, but give the dimensions and passenger count when you request a quote so the right vehicle is assigned. Admission rules for props at the festival are set separately by the organisers.
How far in advance should I arrange transport?
As early as you can for a festival of this scale, particularly for arrivals and departures on the opening and closing days and for any journey on 30 October. Parking in particular is capacity-limited and booked ahead.
